Working Online
I've been working online and by telephone with clients for over 10 years. Although it's not the same as face-to-face, most people adjust very quickly to the format. Below I've tried to answer some common questions about the differences between regular and online work.
How do we start therapy online?
The process is just the same as if we were to meet in person. We will agree a time, I will send you a secure password-protected link to Zoom link that opens in any web browser and we will chat for 20-30 minutes about what you are looking to get from your sessions. This process allows me to make sure we are a good fit to work online and gives you the opportunity to sense and feel if this way of working will be OK for you.
There is no obligation or charge for this meeting.
Is working online suitable for couples or teenagers?
Yes. Couples can benefit from working online just as much as individuals. Online group meeting technology allows couples to have a session even when they are not in the same location. Most young people meet online most days which means they often take to online therapy like ducks to water.
Is working online the same as working in person?
The short answer is no, but it's the next best thing. It can feel a bit unfamiliar to meet online rather than in person for the first time. We won't have as much access to each other's body language or presence either, but the senses do recalibrate and the experience usually starts to normalise fairly quickly. I have several exercises that can help this process.
Is there a way to optimise the online experience?
Finding a private place to talk where you won't be interrupted for 50 minutes is really important. In a perfect world this private place will have good internet connection too! If you will be using a laptop it may be worth investing in a small internet booster such as this one. I can talk you through other ways to improve your internet connection.
Do I have to install anything on my computer/phone?
I am happy to guide you through this process.
What if something goes wrong and we can’t see or hear each other?
That will probably be frustrating for both of us. Part of our first meeting will involve exploring this aspect and what my preferences are should we have ongoing technology issues.
What about confidentiality?
In terms of what we say to each other, my approach to confidentiality is the same and begins from the moment you contact me.
Can I see you in person after working online with you?
Meeting in person can enhance the online experience tremendously - unfortunately that's not an option for any of us at the moment. When we are all allowed to meet in person again, I will invite you to come and see me at my room in Finsbury Park, London.
